Does My Heating System Need Repair or Replacement?

Winters in New Jersey can be frigid.  If your heating system can’t seem to keep up with the dropping temperatures, it is probably time to get it serviced.  Look out for these indicators that your furnace or boiler needs attention.

  • Higher than normal energy bills
  • Home is not as warm as you want it to be
  • Uneven heat throughout your home
  • Airflow from your vents seems weak
  • Foul or burning odor
  • Air quality issues: dryness and/or static electricity shocks, excessive dust
  • Loud noises like banging or rattling coming from your system
  • System is over 12 years old

Avoid emergency breakdowns

The average life of a home heating and cooling system is 15 years. If your HVAC system is 12 years or older, it is time to plan for a new one so that you avoid being caught in an emergency situation.

Most people only buy a new furnace when their old one fails, but if they can plan ahead they will save themselves a lot of trouble. If your furnace fails in the middle of winter, new equipment might not be immediately available, which means you could be without heat for several days, potentially a very serious situation.

Why now might be the best time to replace your HVAC

Utilities are running several programs that can provide rebates or interest-free loans. Through PSE&G, for example, a qualifying buyer can get as much as a $25,000 loan, to be repaid over several years, interest-free, via their utility bill. Meyer & Depew is a participating contractor with most utility companies.

At Meyer & Depew, we offer frequent specials, such as free duct cleaning when you buy a new heating and cooling system, a $600 value.

In addition, HVAC equipment is only going to increase in cost, due to changes in the law surrounding refrigerants. The new systems will be more eco-friendly but also more expensive. The cost could increase by as much as 10% in the first quarter of 2025.

Replacement means you can upgrade to a system that might serve your needs better. You can get an energy-efficient system, a more sophisticated air conditioning unit, or a heat pump. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR® certified HVAC equipment can save you money on energy bills, and many utility companies offer instant rebate programs for eligible equipment.

Planning ahead means you’ll be in a position to take your time and plan your purchase.

If you suspect your heating needs service or replacement, be proactive!

Call Meyer & Depew – our professional technicians are adept at diagnosing and fixing all gas and electric heating system models. We patiently and clearly explain any issues and what options you have and disclose the full cost of all those options before any work is done.

Be wary of attempting any repairs yourself. HVAC systems are complex and involve high-voltage electricity, combustible gases, and carbon monoxide. A repair done incorrectly can end up costing more money than a professional repair, void your warranty, or worse, be very unsafe.

Regular maintenance saves money

In addition to replacement and repair, we offer a yearly full-service maintenance check, during which we service the filter, flue and drain on your heating system so that it will operate safely and efficiently. New customers can get this service for only $89.

Stay warm all winter!
